Art 309 Spring

Evidence of successful teaching and learning during art 309 clinical experiences-

Description: I co-taught a HOIC workshop on sewing.

Rationale:

-I had a very good experience with this workshop, I think what went well was that a lot more students completed their dream pillows than I had originally thought. Almost every student who signed up had previous experience sewing, so most of them finished within the hour and a half. We were well organized and prepared for those who would and wouldn’t finish in time. They seemed to really like it and there was a lot of communication when they got stuck. The students did such amazing work. The biggest challenge was just going around and making sure everyone was being helped, we did get around to everyone but it would’ve been a little harder had there been twice as many students. Often students would get stuck at the same points but we were able to address them all. If it were done again, I would make sure we had both pieces of the projector, not just the computer but the camera too, to show in more detail and closer up, we didn’t realize it didn’t have one, we genuinely thought it did. I would also prepare more demos, with more time we could’ve gone through different accessories they could’ve attatched.

-Through this experience, I discovered that although I don’t have all the expertise in every medium, I always give my all and feel at my best when I’m teaching and when I’m helping students create something they can express themselves with. I never want to lose the passion I have for it, it’s really important to me. What I enjoyed most was watching the students work and bond. They really went all out on their pillows and it felt like a mutual learning experience even if it was my(and Kalyn’s) workshop. They were so creative and into the project, it was great to watch. It felt very successful.

HOIC Workshop-

Description: Sewing workshop at HOIC. Students sewed their written dreams into pillows that they got to make. We interacted with pillows both as physical objects with personal meaning and as a metaphor for our dreams. We examined the work of artists Nettie Pettway Young and Michael James for inspiration. Students were introduced to different sewing techniques as well as learned basic stitch techniques to work with.

Rationale: Our intention behind our workshop was to give students the chance make something that's not that common within the educational art classroom. While also allowing them to think about their future goals and aspirations in a way that's reflective and personal.

Teaching philosophy and Resume-

Teaching Philosophy: As a teacher I believe that all students should have the access to the same education and to a safe classroom environment. This is why as a teacher I do everything in my power to help a student and provide them the resources they need regardless of the situation they’re in. I strive to create a learning environment where my students can grow not only as student but as people too. I desire to make a positive impact on students lives, I believe that with the right tools and my support I can help my students succeed and reach their goals.
